The CDC are committed to working together with their residents to take charge of the well-being and harmony of the community, and to forge stronger bonds within the community”.

The CDC organise events and programmes to reach out to the residents and bring out the VIBRANT community buzzing with action and excitement. Some of the projects initiated:-

1. Racial Harmony Programmes
Organised and celebrated in July every year, the CDC play a leading role in promoting racial harmony in the community through the various programmes and activities. The CDC aim to build on their existing role of expanding the common space for interaction, nurturing and deepening ties among the residents of different ethnic groups.

One example of the Racial Harmony programme is North East CDC’s run an ethnic bonding home-stay programme whereby students spend a weekend with a foster family of another race and through the stay learn more about the culture of that race as they share their own. This programme has played a pivotal role in promoting better understanding among students of the different cultures in Singapore.

2. Youth Programmes
In our efforts to reach out to youths, the CDC organise programmes to engage both schooling and working youths. The CDC also facilitated the formation of interest groups among youths, building their capabilities and guide them to create multiplier effects from their initiatives.

The CDC also engage the youths through sports and adventure, social recreation, national education, the arts and culture, community service and fund-raising projects as well as offer platforms for youths to discuss social and national issues.

An example is the Worldview Youth Conference held by South West CDC annually. It is a platform for both local and international youths to discuss and exchange views based on global perspective and encourage them to “think globally, act locally”, and promote cross-cultural understanding through the sharing of common space and experiences of youths from different nationalities and races.

3. Elderly Programmes
To actively engage the elderly, the CDC introduce various programmes for example, talks, outings and befriender service.
The Community Outreach for the Elderly (COPE) programme is a befriender service run by South East CDC where it aims to draw the elderly into the community and engage them through meaningful activity such as line dancing.

The primary focus of COPE is on older residents staying alone in one-room and two-room flats or from low-income families, although some COPE teams also look after lonely elderly in other flat types.

4. Healthy Lifestyle Programmes
Sports and healthy lifestyle programmes have always been an effective platform to bring people together. As a means to foster community bonding, the CDC leverage on such activities which appeal to the masses and to bring people of different cultures, genders, races and religious beliefs together. These activities also provide an avenue for inter-generation and multi-racial interaction. For example, the North West CDC’s Brisk Walking Club welcomes all races and ages; currently with more than 27,000 members.

The CDC collaborated with numerous community partners and organisations which includes People’s Association Constituency Sports Clubs, Singapore Sports Council, Health Promotion Board and the various National Sports Associations to bring these activities to the residents.

The North West Brisk Walking flagship programme of the North West CDC organise regular brisk walks within their neighbourhoods and local scenic spots and hold health talks for their members.

5. Arts and Culture Programmes
The CDC organise Arts and Culture programmes for residents to come together and bond through a common interest. Various platforms were provided at the district, GRC and constituency levels for local arts groups, including those hosted at the community centres/clubs(CCs) to perform. The CDC also hold concerts and bring in quality performing acts for residents to enjoy and in the process, enhance their quality of life.

One such activity is South West CDC’s “Saturday! Series”, jointly organised with the Grassroots Organisations where residents were treated to various visual and performing arts to enhance their appreciation of the arts and greater understanding of the different cultures.

Central Singapore CDC also organise a series of regular arts-based community outreach programme. The objective is to promote interest, passion and a vibrant place for the arts and to enhance interaction and bonding between people of different races, generations and walks of life.
