What is a good way to get off to a flying start in 2017? For our volunteers at the recent WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks, they have chosen to start the year by conveying their well-wishes to the low-income families in the North West District through tangible actions.

Thanks to the collective efforts of these volunteers, 2017 has started on a positive note for 6,600 disadvantaged families in the North West District, which received a WeCare Festive pack each as part of the annual flagship WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks programme. For 70 families, they also benefitted from home improvement services during the three-week campaign.
This year, the WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks programme recorded 2,000 corporate and community volunteers, the highest number since it was started four years ago. For the first time, the programme also saw the participation of students from Institutes of Higher Learning – Singapore Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic.
From conducting house visits to find out about the needs of the families to packing and distributing the WeCare Festive packs, these volunteers were involved in every phase of the programme. Seven corporate partners also provided additional home improvement services for selected households. Notably, City Developments Limited (CDL) – one of North West CDC’s long-time corporate partners – also went beyond distributing WeCare Festive packs and carrying out home improvement services at the rental blocks this year to create a learning space and library for some 200 children and youths residing at Limbang.
Located at the Limbang Park Residents’ Committee centre, the “Learning Space @ Limbang” is a vibrantly decorated space filled with inspiring messages and a diverse collection of books donated by National Library Board. It is set to become a welcoming learning space for the children to spend quality time after school. This initiative will also be augmented with character-building courses conducted by City Sunshine Club (CSC) – CDL’s staff volunteer programme – every fortnight over the next two years. Nanyang Technological University students will also conduct tuition classes for secondary school students living in the rental blocks.
Despite diverse backgrounds, everyone worked hand in hand to make the 21 sessions of WeCare @ North West – Service Weeks a success – on schedule and on target. Thank you, dear donors, partners and volunteers!

‘‘ The WeCare Festive pack cannot have come at a better time. Not only does it help to relieve my financial situation, it has also brought me some festive cheer – with Chinese New Year just around the corner. I am thankful for this kind gesture from the community and the hard work of the volunteers.”
‘‘ Sometimes life may deal us a bad hand. And it is heartening to know that the community still cares for us during times like these. It is not the value of the products in the WeCare Festive packs that matter, it is the warm thoughts behind each bag that bears a greater significance.”
‘‘ Receiving the WeCare Festive pack is a keen reminder that regardless of how the odds are stacked against us and how many challenges we are facing, we are not alone in this journey. It inspires me to keep going and work towards a better life for my family and I.”
‘‘ I am grateful for the help rendered by North West CDC and City Developments Limited. Throughout the entire home improvement process, they have shown great patience and consideration. They have even gone the extra mile to find out about my needs beforehand.”
